Yes, absolutely! In general, the typical protective life provided by a paint over galvanized (duplex) system is 1.5 times that of the singular lives of the galvanized coating and paint film added together. This improvement in the service life of duplex coatings is possible because when a paint coating over galvanized steel becomes weathered and the paint film barrier is broken, the zinc corrosion products form only on the surface of the exposed areas and do not cause the undercutting, blistering or flaking of the paint film typically found with the weathering of paint on ungalvanized steel. In fact, the zinc corrosion products can retard further damage by sealing pores and cracks in the paint film, providing additional protection to the galvanized steel substrate. Thus, the galvanized coating on the steel prevents premature loss of paint adherence. At the same time, the paint film protects the underlying zinc layer from premature degradation during outdoor weathering.
