The minimum coating thickness standards for a galvanized coating are generally based on the thickness of the material being processed. The thicker the material, the thicker the zinc coating required to protect it from corrosion.

The coating thickness requirements for iron and steel products are contained in ASTM Standard A-123 while ASTM Standard A-153 lists the requirements for iron and steel hardware items. Should a fabrication contain items of various thicknesses, then the zinc coating thickness on each type of material is required to conform to the individual specification for that item's thickness.
